Lise's Lens: May 15, 2025

I am reading up on the new Pope, sampling delicious eats at Heritage Fest, and considering the act of reading in community.

WHAT I’M READING

  • I have been reading up on Pope Leo XIV. As the spiritual leader for nearly a billion and a half people around the world, his appointment is a big deal and I am curious to see how his papacy unfolds. In 1983, when John Paul II was Pope, he was rocking my world by being the first (and only) Pope to step foot on Haitian soil where he made an impactful pronouncement “Il faut que les choses changent” (translation: Things must change [in Haiti]).  This was part of what led to the fall of the Duvalier regime. Fast forward to today where here, and around the world, there is no shortage of hot button issues and the pope’s stance can have a huge impact. I, for one, never thought that the Pope would be asked to comment on the role of AI in the future of the church, but here we are! This article from The New York Times made me realize just how relevant it could be. AI really is affecting all facets of life.

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT

  • It seems like every year, our annual Heritage Fest grows more and more vibrant. For those who don’t know, Heritage Fest is a chance for community members to showcase performances, cuisine, art, or traditions tied to their cultural heritage in a grand celebration of diversity on campus. I love this event because I always end up learning something new – whether it be about a specific culture or a member of our community. And yes, the food is always amazing. In fact, every year we have to give Dining Services a heads up to prepare less food because our students fill up on all the homemade treats at the fair before lunch.

WHAT I'M WATCHING/LISTENING TO

  • I love this video I stumbled upon on Instagram of hundreds of people reading — alone, but together. It’s a nice reminder that reading doesn’t have to be a solitary act (a concept our Library Director, Jenna Wolf, explored with faculty and staff at a presentation yesterday), and that we can derive enjoyment and entertainment from something that doesn’t require a plug or batteries. These get-togethers also remind me a lot of our Library Read-A-Thons!

WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

If you drop your kid(s) off by the Fit every morning, you may have noticed that our pool reconstruction is nearly complete — just in time for summer next month!
