Campers ages 6 to 15 from throughout the Greater Boston Area descended upon the campus again this summer for six weeks of programming dedicated to the creative arts at the school’s annual Summer Arts camp (summerarts.csw.org). Several CSW alumni/ae served as counselors this season, introducing young minds to a wide variety of activities in the visual and performing arts!

Now in its seventh season, Summer Arts gives participants the chance to unplug, let loose, and tap into their creative sides. Offering over sixty-five activities in the visual arts, dance, drama, media, music, photography, sports, swimming, textiles, and writing, the program provides a warm and encouraging environment where young people are able to step out of their comfort zones and discover new talents and interests, without fear of judgement.

In addition to more traditional courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography, this year’s campers had the opportunity to participate in unique courses such as “Fashion Design,” “Hula Hoop & Fitness,” “Culinary Arts,” “Cartooning & Comics,” “Tinkering,” “Stage Makeup,” “Afro-Haitian Dance,” “Theater of the Absurd,” and “One-Minute Movie Magic.”

For the fourth year in a row, Summer Arts also welcomed over a dozen students from the Yihai School in Beijing for a language immersion program with an emphasis on the arts. These students participated alongside local campers in the regular arts curriculum, while also taking classes in English and going on excursions through the Greater Boston Area.

On Friday, August 4, the camp season came to a close with the presentation of its second Summer Arts Festival Afternoon, where campers and counselors showcased all they had been working on throughout the summer. After a colorful procession and opening ceremony, families, friends and art enthusiasts were treated to an open gallery exhibition and performances in a cappella singing, improv sketch comedy, jazz instrumental music, video animation, and more. Visitors also had the chance to partake in face-painting, button-making, and other creative activities.
