CSW Says Goodbye to a Deeply Rooted Friend

Students may notice something — or rather, someone — missing from the quad when they return to campus this fall, as the community was recently obliged to say goodbye to the majestic maple that has called CSW home for an estimated 60 years.

While the school has gone to great lengths to save the tree, installing bolts and wires to support its growth, an inspection by CSW’s arborist in August sadly revealed that the tree was deeply rotted and rapidly wasting away. The tree was removed out of an abundance of caution on August 9, 2017. Community members on campus paid their respects to the tree prior to its removal and plans are underway to craft a memento of some kind from the wood that remains. A new tree will likely be planted in its place.

CSW—a gender-inclusive day and boarding school for grades 9-12—is a national leader in progressive education. We live out our values of inquiry-based learning, student agency, and embracing diverse perspectives in every aspect of our student experience. Young people come to CSW to learn how to learn and then put what they learn into action—essential skills they carry into their futures as doers, makers, innovators, leaders, and exceptional humans who do meaningful work in the world.
