2017-18 School Year Off to an Exciting Start

It's been a busy few weeks at CSW as students, faculty, and staff returned to campus to embark on a new school year. The festivities kicked off in late August with orientation for new faculty and staff members, followed by training for student dorm leaders, peer mentors, and SDLC participants. New and returning boarding students arrived in September with special programs and activities catered to new boarders and their families, and break-out sessions and gatherings for international families and students and families of color. Meanwhile, members of the school’s cross country, field hockey, volleyball, and soccer teams have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming fall athletics season.

The first official day of Mod 1 commenced on Wednesday, September 6, with a rousing, student-led assembly. The following morning, Head of School Jane Moulding offered opening remarks, urging community members “to be open to all possibilities.” She shared the story of Maryam Mirzakhani, a brilliant mathematician, writer, and mother who in 2014 won the coveted Fields Medal in mathematics, making her the first woman and the first Iranian to do so. Sadly, Mirzakhani passed away from cancer in July 2017, but the legacy of her radiant mind and revolutionary work remains.

Jane called on students, faculty, and staff to use Maryam as an example over the upcoming year. “I, for one, firmly believe that every single member of the CSW community has the potential to break down barriers and the confidence to be comfortable in new settings,” she said.  “And I know that when we free ourselves up to learning and growing without limits we set the stage for a year, and a life, of ground-breaking possibility.”

Here’s to the start of new year of possibilities!
