Patrick Bai ’21 Accepted to NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra

CSW congratulates Patrick Bai ’21, who was recently accepted to the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO) at the New England Conservatory’s Preparatory School. Each year, over 1000 musicians between the ages of 14 and 18 apply for one of just 90 spots in the prestigious YPO, the school’s senior-most orchestra.

“It’s pretty much unheard of for a freshman to be accepted to the program,” says CSW Music Department Chair Michael Weinstein. “Patrick has a great ear and strong musical instincts.”

Patrick has been playing the piano seriously since age six, but only just picked up the double bass—the instrument he will be playing with the YPO—two years ago. He auditioned with the orchestra's director, David Loebel, who is also the Conservatory’s Director of of Orchestras.

“No matter how confident or prepared I am, I always get nervous for auditions,” Patrick shares. “But it went well and I am very excited to be a part of the YPO.”

As a member of the YPO, he will rehearse with the full group every Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. CSW community members are encouraged to support Patrick and the entire YPO at one of four concerts this year, all at Boston’s Jordan Hall:
