Jane's Pocket Change: Consolidated Goodbyes II

Our last assembly was this past Monday. In a way, it was the beginning of the end as we kicked off the week that leads to graduation. Once again, we watched as the illustrious assembly coordinators — Robin ’20, Theo ’20, and Abbey ’20 — grew before our very eyes as masters of ceremony and impresarios, handling crises, games, long announcements, even longer lines, musical interludes, and dance parties. Throughout the year, they have shown their individual and group talents, their humor, and their poise, and they have personified CSW.

The assembly on Monday began with a hilarious video from Consolidated Media (CSW’s spirited student media group), loosely based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, featuring a journey of hope, glory, and demise all over the CSW campus. We then played “Name That Senior” and guessed who the member of the senior class was after hearing a few obscure facts about them. The assembly ended with the annual sharing of testimonials by our seniors, which never fail to be powerful and thoughtful. To hear the seniors speak from their hearts as they reflect on their time here is inspiring to us all, and the advice they give to our younger students is sincere and poignant. A list of the essence of some of this senior wisdom follows:

  • Find yourself and be yourself.
  • Find people to talk to, be it a fellow student or one of our awesome teachers.
  • Consider the role of health and fitness in your lives and the ways in which it helps you find inner strength.
  • Love yourself and others will love you.
  • Get involved and take advantage of the opportunities that this school offers, even if you’re scared; any opportunity will help you to learn about yourself.
  • Notice things and speak up.
  • Make sure you bring the arts into your life.
  • Know that this can be a place where you will feel safe and noticed in ways that may never have happened before.

Today (Wednesday), as I write this, Rock/Pop has just begun their annual on-the-quad concert — and I need to get out there and enjoy! There are still a couple of “Jane mannequins” left around, the tent is up and ready for Senior Night. It is happening, this end, this sweet to-be-savored end. Let’s enjoy it once again until the fall comes around once more.

Congratulations, everyone, on a wonderful year. Have a splendid summer — and seniors/soon-to-be graduates, be sure to come back and visit and see your teachers and friends. Don’t forget to meet and tell your stories to our new head of school. I will be out there watching and checking in from time to time.
