Lise's Lens: April 20, 2023

April 22 is Earth Day! In this sustainability-themed edition, Lise shares an article about “clean charging,” recaps Wednesday’s Earth Day programming, and shares some recommended documentaries to watch in observation of this important annual event.

WHAT I’M READING

  • With Earth Day coming up, I thought this Washington Post article about “clean charging” was a fascinating read. The author points out that even if people are told that changing their behaviors will save them money, it’s still very difficult to get them to do so. But what if our devices manage it for us? Apple has been trying it, and they claim, most people don’t even notice...

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT

  • I am thinking about how much can happen in just one hour. Yesterday, our students organized a series of hour-long Earth Day workshops (15 in total!) led by faculty, staff, and special guests. Topics included “Using Machine Learning to Predict Weather,” “Making Bioplastics,” “Vegan Cooking,” and a fascinating session with Daniel Arons, the architect behind our very own Garthwaite Center for Science and Art. It was amazing to walk around and see the vast variety and depth of learning going on — and on such an important topic. I am so proud of the students on our Sustainability Committee for putting this together.

WHAT I'M WATCHING/LISTENING TO

  • This blog post from the Honest Consumer has some great recommendations for what to watch this Earth Day. I’ve got my eyes set on The True Cost, which examines the dark side of fast fashion, a topic that I know is an important issue for many of our students. Some exciting news for our students: the Academic Office is currently exploring a series of possible courses that will delve into this issue through a variety of different lenses (art, history, science, etc.).
WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

When an event runs smoothly, it’s usually because a group of individuals worked very hard behind the scenes to ensure success. Here’s a peek at the students of Sustainability Committee working a late night in preparation for their all-school Earth Day programming the next day.
