Girls Varsity Tennis Win vs Brimmer and May

Coach Alex Vinh
The Girls Varsity Tennis Team delivered a commanding win (4-1) in their first Independent Girl Conference (IGC) matchup on 4/19/24 against Brimmer and May. The match was at the Gann Academy courts on a cool cloudy day with a brisk wind adding to the challenge.  Despite injuries affecting both team’s starting lineups, both teams had teammates step up. The format was 8 Game Pro Set, win by 2 with a 7 point tiebreaker at 8-8. CSW Lineup:

1st Singles – McKenna Zhang
2nd Singles – Emily Tran
3rd Singles – Lea Beauchesne
1st Doubles – Crystal Liu & Coco Chen
2nd Doubles – Joyce Zhang & Gemma Wang

1st Singles (Win 8-0): Freshman McKenna promoted to the 1st singles position for the first time this season and won with a dominating performance. McKenna was in the zone, playing her best tennis all season. Delivering hard shots and serves that were difficult for her opponent to return.  McKenna used her favorite weapon of relentless topspin ground strokes that kept her Brimmer opponent on the defensive.

2nd Singles (Win 8-0): Returning player and team captain, Emily, also had a standout win.  Showing her experience, she provided  a masterclass in strategy with steady returns and good ball placement.  She controlled the pace of the game and outplayed her opponent.

3rd  Singles (Loss 2-8): Freshman Lea Beauchesne debuts in her first varsity game as a singles player. Both players were more evenly matched, but Lea’s inexperience got the best of her.  Despite nerves, Lea had a lot of good hits and nice rallies and showed a lot of promise. She did great for her first singles match and has taken it as a learning experience.  She vows to get the win “next time”.

1st Doubles (Win 8-1): Crystal & Coco has emerged as our strongest doubles team.  Strong communication is the cornerstone of a good doubles team.  Working well together at the baseline they didn’t let too many balls get passed them.  They struggled a bit when Brimmer hit short balls, but learned to adjust quickly.

2nd Doubles (Win 8-5): Joyce & Gemma our 2nd doubles team struggled a bit out of the gate.  The game was close and the score went back and forth. Many games went to multiple deuces and the 2nd doubles was the longest game of the match at 70 min. After 35 minutes it was only tied 4-4. They found their stride in the second half of the match and began to pull away. Both teams exhausted played until the end with little break.

Overall Score: 4-1: A great match with the Brimmer girls tennis team, though they lost they were great competitors and good sports.  In good spirit, they agreed to play in exhibition matches and a few fun rallies with CSW players.  We appreciate Brimmer and May’s team sportswomanship.
