Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team defeats Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall

Coach Alex
The Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team secured another victory in the IGC league, defeating Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall 4-1. With this win, they now hold a 3-1 record against other IGC schools. The match took place alongside the Boys’ match at Gann Academy, creating a lively atmosphere as both teams cheered each other on. Despite the windy conditions, the girls displayed excellent performance on courts 1-2, while the boys competed on courts 3-4. The day was filled with a mix of emotions, including tough losses, hard-fought close games, and significant wins. Special congratulations go to Maya, who moved up to play 3rd singles, and Olivia, who participated in her first doubles match alongside Coco. Their contributions were pivotal in securing the team’s victory. A great way to close out the fifth mod! CSW lineup stood as follows:

1st Singles – McKenna Zhang
2nd Singles – Emily Tran
3rd Singles – Maya El Azzouzi
1st Doubles – Olivia Liu & Coco Chen
2nd Doubles – Joyce Zhang & Gemma Wang

The game format was 8 game pro set, no ads, win by 2 with a 7 point tiebreaker at 7-7.

1st Singles (Loss 1-8):  McKenna playing at 1st singles again faced an exceptionally strong opponent from CHCH. Rumor has it that her adversary competes at a high level in Turkey, and whether true or not, it’s certainly believable. CHCH dominated most of the game, skillfully maneuvering McKenna around the court. Despite being outmatched, McKenna never gave up and fought for every ball. McKenna loved exchanging hard forehand rallies with her opponent. Her opponent wisely avoided feeding her too many of those shots. While it’s challenging to compete against more experienced opponents, McKenna gained valuable experience points and perhaps even a new friend and playing partner.

2nd Singles (Win 8-3): Captain Emily Tran showcased her best match play this season. Her serves were spot-on, leaving opponents struggling to return them. Emily aced several points with a slice serve that curved over the net and landed shallow. She started strong, securing an early lead, and played with confidence. Emily’s strategic ball placement kept her opponent on the defensive. Despite her CHCH opponent’s tenacity, Emily maintained the pressure and ultimately closed out the match.

3rd  Singles (Win 8-6): Maya made her debut at 3rd singles with a hard-fought victory. The two players were evenly matched, resulting in close games that swung back and forth. Their playing styles were similar, but both sides made unforced errors as they sought their rhythm. Maya delivered powerful serves, although her opponent displayed greater consistency. Playing 14 games straight in a singles match is physically demanding, yet Maya demonstrated remarkable stamina and perseverance to secure the win.

1st Doubles (Win 8-7, tiebreak 10-2): Coco and Olivia made their debut together as first doubles. The match was incredibly evenly matched, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats. Each game was a nail-biter, with Coco and Olivia having to earn every point. While they never trailed, CHCH was always close behind. The decision to play without ads turned out to be a good one, as this intense match could still be playing otherwise. In the end, CHCH rallied strongly, perhaps realizing that Coco and Olivia were relatively new partners. They used shots down the middle and strategic positioning to confuse our duo. Tied at 7-7, a tiebreak game ensued. Fortunately, Coco and Olivia composed themselves, communicated effectively, and closed out the tiebreak in a commanding fashion.

2nd Doubles (Win 8-1): Joyce and Gemma, our 2nd doubles team, secured an authoritative win against the CHCH team. To be fair, CHCH’s 2nd doubles players were competing in their first-ever match, making them fairly inexperienced. Despite the nerves that come with a debut match, both teams had some great points and exciting rallies. We hope CHCH’s players gained valuable experience from this match.

Overall Score: 4-1: A fantastic way to end the mod! The games covered a wide range, and a couple of them could easily have swung in CHCH’s favor for a different outcome. It was heartening to witness good sportsmanship and camaraderie among the tennis players. Looking forward to the next match against CHCH!
